Cycle Day of action to planned to tackle bike theft and promote safe cycling

York Business Improvement District (BID) is joining forces with North Yorkshire Police, York Cycle Campaign, and Minster Police for a Cycle Day of Action on Friday 4th April, aimed at improving cycle security and promoting safe cycling in the city.

The initiative will see a strong partnership approach to tackling bike theft and encouraging responsible cycling.

The day will begin at York Minster, where North Yorkshire Police will host a Bike Register station at Deangate, from 12noon-3pm, giving cyclists the opportunity to register their bikes for free and protect them against theft.

Alongside the registration efforts, York BID and York Cycle Campaign will be out in the city, distributing bike safety information to cycle racks to raise awareness about secure bike locking. Police officers will also engage with cyclists, providing education on responsible riding through pedestrian areas and acting where necessary to address dangerous cycling.

Carl Alsop, Operations Manager at York BID, said: “York is a cycling city, and we want to make it as safe and accessible as possible for everyone. By working together with our partners, we can help prevent bike theft, inform cyclists, and ensure everyone can enjoy cycling in a safe and responsible way.”

Cyclists are encouraged to visit the Bike Register stations and take simple steps to keep their bikes secure and ensuring York can continue to be a leading city for safe and sustainable cycling.

Leah Bennett from York Cycle Campaign, added: “We’re excited to be part of this initiative to help make York a better place to cycle. Encouraging safe cycling and providing practical theft prevention advice will benefit both cyclists and pedestrians alike.”
